Searches for three high-level University positions, expected to be filled by July 1, are in various stages of completion. Pitt is seeking a dean of the School of Education, a vice provost and dean of students, and a director of the University Center for International Studies (UCIS).

Provost James V. Maher has asked for short-lists of unranked finalists by March 15.

The search committee for a new dean of the education school has narrowed candidates to a short list, according to Robert F. Pack, vice provost for Academic Planning and Resources Management. "We're in the process of setting up appointments for campus visits," said Pack, who chairs the search committee.

The new dean will replace Kenneth Metz, who is returning to the faculty June 30.

Pack said candidates typically come to campus for a day and meet with senior administrators, faculty of the school, a group of deans, students and staff members, search committee members and representatives of other interested groups, such as the Pittsburgh School District.

The school's web site (Dean Search link) will provide updates on when candidates are coming to campus.

Pack said the committee agreed to guarantee full consideration of applicants until Feb. 1, but that the application pool was still open. "We will still be accepting applications during the campus-visit process, though we feel we've got a good pool of candidates at this point," he said.

The search committee for a new vice provost and dean of students is at a similar stage, according to Jack L. Daniel, vice provost for Academic Affairs, who chairs that committee.

Candidates are expected to visit the campus during February and early March, Daniel said. "While the candidates are on campus, they will also meet with the chancellor and provost, a select group of deans, students, Equipoise and staff representatives, the staff of Student Affairs and other key administrators." Candidates will not give public presentations, Daniel said.

The vice provost and dean of students is a restructured position, succeeding the vice chancellor for Student Affairs. The new appointee will replace Robert P. Gallagher, who will step down as vice chancellor for Student Affairs June 30.

Vice Provost for Research George E. Klinzing said the search committee for a new director of UCIS has not narrowed the candidate pool sufficiently to invite a short list of applicants to campus. Klinzing, who chairs the search committee, said he expected decisions on a short list to be made by mid February.

The director of UCIS will replace Burkart Holzner, who will resign June 30 to become a full-time faculty member.
