New radiation oncology department to open
The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute Department of Radiation Oncology at Magee-Womens Hospital, specializing in the treatment of gynecologic and breast cancers, will open July 24. The new department will be open to the public for tours on Aug. 1 from 3 to 6 p.m.
A number of new therapy options will be offered at the site. With the addition of a multi-energy linear accelerator, high energy photon therapy can be used for deep-seated tumors, while electron treatments can be applied to superficial anomalies. The addition of a high-dose remote afterloader will allow patients to undergo radiation implants on an outpatient basis.
A treatment planning system will allow physicians to three-dimensionally plan treatment for greater accuracy. The facility specializes in cancers in women but has capabilities for three-dimensional treatment planning for prostate cancer and extensive experience with all cancers.
