New slogan designed to represent Pitt priorities

"Transforming the Present – Discovering the Future." More than a few members of the University community have been wondering about the new slogan that began appearing on University stationery and brochures late last fall.

According to Director of Communications Ken Service, the slogan grew out of the communications committee put together last fall by Vice Chancellor for Student and Public Affairs Leon Haley and a desire by Chancellor J. Dennis O'Connor for a phrase to describe the University.

"The chancellor had requested a positioning statement that said something about our priorities and is true and concise so it could be used on all of the external materials for the University, letterhead and brochures and such things," Service said.

Service said the slogan was developed by staff in the Public Affairs area.

"It's an effort to have something that comes to people's minds when they think of the University," he added, "a brief something that says something about the essence and mission of the University." Service said he has not yet gotten any feedback on the slogan.
