UPMC wins award for study of antibiotics
A UPMC Health System multidisciplinary team took second place, winning a $5,000 grant for research improving the standard of practice for the use of antibiotics in surgery.
Susan Skledar, clinical pharmacist, Paige Gross, Drug Use/Disease State Management Program pharmacist, Anthony Udekwu, medical director of surgical services, and Michael Ryan, executive director of pharmacy services, teamed to win the institutional grant in Abbott Laboratories' National Hospital Pharmacy Quality Awards.
The team's study looked at the timing, selection and duration of antimicrobial therapies on patients undergoing surgery.
As a result, overall compliance with the standards set for timing, selection and duration of surgical antimicrobials has improved and surpassed established thresholds. Antibiotic selection has been streamlined, and antimicrobial costs of treatment per patient have decreased.
