Sports Medicine schedules physicals for high school athletes

Pitt's Center for Sports Medicine will provide physical examinations and musculoskeletal screenings for high school athletes involved in winter sports on Oct. 29 at the Center for Sports Medicine on North Craig Street.

Physical examinations are required for all inter-high school sports participants by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA). The musculoskeletal screenings, which are not required by the PIAA, include tests of muscle strength and flexibility, agility, range of motion in major joints, posture and body composition.

"Pre-season exams and screenings are essential for growing athletes because they help identify pre-existing medical conditions or musculoskeletal deficits that may need special attention or treatment to prevent injury or illness," said David Stone, assistant director of the sports center.

Sports medicine physicians, physical therapists and athletic trainers will conduct the examinations and screenings. There is a $10 charge for each one.

For more information, or to make an appointment for individual athletes or teams, call 578-3320, Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
