Physicals set for high school athletes

Pitt's Center for Sports Medicine will provide physical exams and musculoskeletal screenings Feb. 19 at Keystone Oaks High School.

Physical exams are required by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) before any student can participate in inter-high school sports.

Musculoskeletal screenings, which are not required by the PIAA, include tests of muscle strength and flexibility, agility, range of motion in major joints, posture and body composition.

"Pre-season exams and screenings are essential for growing athletes because they help identify pre-existing medical conditions or musculoskeletal deficits that may need special attention or treatment to prevent injury or illness," said David Stone, professor of orthopaedic surgery. Sports medicine physicians, physical therapists and athletic trainers will conduct the screenings and examinations. There is a $10 fee for each screening and exam. For reservations, call 578-3320.
