T. Terry Hayashi

T. Terry Hayashi, former chairperson of obstetrics and gynecology in Pitt's School of Medicine and Magee-Womens Hospital, died Feb. 7 of cancer.

A resident of O'Hara Township, Hayashi, 75, joined the Pitt faculty in 1965 after 10 years at the Temple University School of Medicine. He served as chair of obstetrics and gynecology in the School of Medicine and at Magee from 1974 to 1988. He retired from Pitt in June 1995.

During his career, Hayashi also served as chair of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Foundation, and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Develop-ment's child research committee.

In addition, he was president of the American Gynecologic and Obstetrics Society, the Society for Gynecologic Investigation, and a member of the advisory committee of the Planned Parenthood Center of Pittsburgh.

Born and raised in Sacramento, Cal., Hayashi was the son of Japanese immigrants. He was a junior at the University of California at Berkeley when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Caught up in the resulting anti-Japanese frenzy, Hayashi and other members of his family were forced into a relocation camp.

After 10 months in a camp, Hayashi was released with the help of the Quakers and given an opportunity to attend Temple University. He completed his bachelor's degree at Temple in 1944 and, four years later, earned his medical degree at that university.

Following a two-year stint in the Army, during which he served in Germany, Hayashi returned to Temple for his residency in obstetrics and gynecology.

A pioneer in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, Hayashi's research included studies related to pre-eclampsia, a condition of high blood pressure, swelling and protein in the urine that can be fatal in pregnant women.

Hayashi is survived by his wife, Ursula; four sons, William of Denver, Peter of Boston, James of Quincy, Ill., and Robert of Amherst, Mass.; a daughter, Ann of Maui, Hawaii; a sister, Florence of Chicago, and six grandchildren.
