UCIS director sought

A search committee has been formed for the senior director of international programs/director of the University Center for International Studies (UCIS).

The new director, who will report to the provost, will succeed William I. Brustein, who has accepted a position at the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign, effective January 2007. (See June 22 University Times.)

UCIS is a University-wide organization with a total of 18 component, jointly sponsored and affiliated units that include centers for area studies and centers on topical specializations in international studies. More than 500 faculty members from 31 Arts and Sciences departments and 13 professional schools are UCIS affiliates. The center also employs some 70 staff members.

According to the job description, which is posted on the UCIS web site (, candidates for the senior director’s position must possess an earned doctorate and high scholarly standing and be qualified for a tenured appointment at the full professor level.

The search committee is chaired by George E. Klinzing, vice provost for Research. Committee members are: David Barnes, UCIS board of visitors; David Birnbaum, Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures; Siddharth Chandra, Graduate School of Public and International Affairs and Center for Asian Studies; Annabelle Clippinger, Pitt Arts Program (staff appointee); Kathleen DeWalt, Department of Anthropology and Center for Latin American Studies; Robert Hayden, Department of Anthropology and Center for Russian and East European Studies; Orlando Pacheco-Pizarro, School of Education; Francesca Savoia, Department of French and Italian Languages and Literatures; Alberta Sbragia, Department of Political Science, Center for West European Studies and European Union Center, and Wolfgang Schlör, UCIS associate director. Chuck Lyon, Office of the Provost, is serving as search committee staff person.
