UPMC IT practices recognized

UPMC’s environmentally friendly technology practices have earned it recognition as one of this year’s InformationWeek 500 honorees. UPMC ranked No. 49 on the list, up from No. 105 last year. For two decades, InformationWeek magazine has identified the nation’s most innovative users of information technology across all industries with its annual listing. The 500 companies are featured in the Sept. 15 issue of the magazine.

UPMC has made the list every year since 2002. To be ranked, companies with at least $500 million in annual revenue “must prove that they’re spending IT dollars in innovative ways,” according to the magazine.

UPMC’s IT organization was lauded for significant gains in productivity and cost savings achieved through its virtualization and data center consolidation initiatives. As part of its  environmental sustainability initiatives, the health system realized a 50 percent productivity improvement and cost savings of more than $22 million by optimizing processing power, memory, network traffic and storage utilization.
