Pitt-Bradford associate professor emeritus David L. Blackmore Sr. died Aug. 13, 2008, at UPMC Montefiore of complications from diabetes. He was 66.

An economics graduate of Grove City College, Blackmore earned his MBA from Harvard in 1967. He worked at investment brokerage firm Hefren Tillotson in Pittsburgh before returning to his hometown of Kane, Pa., and joining the UPB faculty.

In 1977 Blackmore became the first professor of business at UPB and was instrumental in developing the campus’s business management program.

“It was Dave’s leadership and vision that made the business program the success that it is today,” said Lizbeth Matz, chair of the Division of Management and Education. “He understood that a good business management program needs to be rooted in the liberal arts. He was also a wonderful role model and mentor to the students.”

Blackmore taught courses in financial accounting, managerial accounting, finance, investment, marketing and small-business management. He also served as a management consultant in the areas of marketing and finance for numerous private and public organizations.

His teaching was recognized in 2000 with the Pitt-Bradford Alumni Association Teaching Excellence Award. In 2003, alumni and friends established the David Blackmore Scholarship Fund for students majoring in business management. This year, UPB renamed its Wall Street Journal Award (given to the outstanding business management senior) the David L. Blackmore Award for Excellence in Business.

In addition to his teaching, Blackmore was president of the campus’s Faculty Senate, 1983-85, and chaired UPB’s business management department.

Blackmore is survived by his wife, Marilyn; sons David Jr., Jonathan and Michael; and three grandchildren.
