SAC announces officers’ slate

The slate of candidates for the Staff Association Council (SAC) officers has been announced.

Running for re-election as president is Richard Colwell. He will be opposed by Barbara Mowery, former president of SAC.

Incumbent Angela Peskie is running for vice president for marketing and communications against Kara Richardson, who serves on SAC’s marketing and communications and program and planning standing committees.

Carol Hodgkiss, current treasurer, is opposed for that office by former treasurer Tammeka Banks.

Gwendolyn Watkins, vice president for steering, is running unopposed.

SAC officers serve two-year terms beginning July 1. SAC members who have served six months on the council are eligible to vote for officers. Winners will be announced at the June 8 SAC meeting.

In other Staff Association Council news:

• The SAC spring assembly, set for May 11, noon-1:30 p.m., in the William Pitt Union Assembly Room, will feature Matt Tolbert, information security officer at Pitt’s Computing Services and Systems Development. Tolbert will speak on “Computer Security and Preventing Identity Theft.”

The event is open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch, but cookies and punch will be provided.

• This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Staff Association Council. A celebration luncheon will be held July 13 as part of the annual new members’ orientation.

SAC is seeking contact information on former officers, who will be invited to the luncheon. For more information, contact the SAC office at 412/624-4236.

• On Fridays beginning July 1, the Oakland Farmer’s Market will sell its wares on Sennott Street between Meyran Avenue and Atwood Street, 3:30-7:30 p.m.

Farmers will be selling a wide variety of locally grown fresh produce, including sweet corn, zucchinis and tomatoes, as well as homemade jams and fresh baked bread.

SAC’s program and planning committee is co-sponsoring the Farmer’s Market July 1 grand opening.

• The SAC-sponsored 15th annual Pitt Kennywood Day is set for June 11. (See April 14 University Times.)

Discounted tickets for the event go on sale at the William Pitt Union ticket office starting tomorrow (April 29) and will be sold until June 10 on a first-come, first-served basis as long as the 2,000 ticket supply lasts.

SAC will hold a raffle to benefit the SAC Book Fund for Children of Staff at the Kennywood Day event. Items to be raffled are four Pitt-themed afghans, a hand-made quilted pillow and six gift baskets.

SAC also offers discounted tickets for alternative days at Kennywood and for Idlewild Park and Sandcastle. For more information, call the SAC office at 412/624-4236.

• The annual council of campuses, a meeting of staff officers from Pitt’s five campuses, will be held in June, on a date to be scheduled. Staff associations rotate hosting the event at their campus; this year’s council will be held at Pitt-Bradford.
