Chancellor Search Update

The University of Pittsburgh Chancellor Search Committee held its first meeting on Friday, Sept. 8. At the meeting, Board of Trustees Chairman J.W. Connolly gave the committee its official charge. He told the committee members that the task of identifying candidates for the position for Board consideration is an "immense responsibility. It is an assignment that will have significant consequences for our University, our community and Western Pennsylvania." Board member James Roddey is chairman of the committee and Board member Martha Munsch serves as vice chair.

The first meeting was primarily an organizational one. The committee reviewed the announcement (see full text below) of the chancellor search that will be placed in several national publications, including The New York Times and The Chronicle of Higher Education.

The committee will begin accepting nominations and applications immediately, and will continue to accept them until qualified candidates are identified.

Campus Comment As part of the search process, the committee will hold open meetings on the Pittsburgh campus and on each of the four regional campuses. The purpose of the meetings will be to give faculty, staff, students and friends of the University an opportunity to tell the committee what characteristics and competencies they are looking for in the next chancellor. The committee set the following schedule for the meetings: Pittsburgh — Wednesday, Sept. 20 Titusville — Friday, Sept. 29 Bradford — Monday, Oct. 2 Greensburg — Friday, Oct. 6 Johnstown — Monday, Oct. 9 The specific times and locations of the meetings will be announced on each campus prior to the meetings.

Student Members Two student members have been added to the committee. They are Elsa Crick, representing the College of General Studies Student Government, and Paul Ferraro, representing the Graduate and Professional Student Association. A representative of the undergraduate students will be selected by the Student Government Board by the end of September. That will bring the committee to its full complement of 24 members. In addition to the students, the members include nine trustees, seven faculty members elected by the University Senate, three deans, one University of Pittsburgh Medical Center representative, and one Staff Association Council representative. (Richard Colwell has replaced Darlene Harris as the Staff Association Council representative).
