Foundation extends its support for iSchool’s diversity program

The School of Information Sciences has been awarded an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant of $819,000 over three years to support the iSchool inclusion institutes.

The institutes are designed to increase the diversity of students enrolled in graduate programs at U.S.-based information schools. This is the third grant from the Mellon foundation to support the program, bringing the total to more than $1.5 million.

The iSchool Inclusion Institute is an undergraduate research and leadership development program that prepares students from underrepresented populations for graduate study and careers in the information sciences. Each year, 20 undergraduate students from across the country attend two summer institutes and conduct a year-long team research project. Through this program, the students explore the educational and research opportunities at each of the iSchools, an international coalition of information schools.

Principal investigators for Pitt’s project are Dean Ronald L. Larsen and James “Kip” Currier; director is Michael Depew.
