Find out if your license plate passes scrutiny at RA Lot event

Is your license plate hard to read and/or peeling?

Join Pitt Mobility and AAA East Central from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 16 for a peeling license plate and car seat safety inspection event at the RA Lot, Fifth Avenue at Ruskin Avenue.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation says a plate is considered illegible when one or more letters or numbers cannot be recognized from 50 feet away. If the license plate shows any blistering, peeling, discoloration or loss of reflectivity, it is also considered illegible.

A person can be pulled over and fined $100 for having a license plate that is deemed "illegible," according to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

If your license plate meets the criteria, you will be able to fill out paperwork to receive a new plate in the mail from PennDOT, free of charge.

There also will be pedestrian safety resources available as well as car seat passenger safety technicians on sight to inspect child passenger seats.
