Book talk: “Adoption Memoirs: Inside Stories,” by Marianne Novy, professor emerita of English and Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies

Novy will discuss her prize-winning new book, “Adoption Memoirs: Inside Stories” (Park Road Books, 2024), which explores 45 published memoirs by adoptees, birthmothers, and adoptive parents — looking into the complexities of adoption. The memoirs, mostly from 21st century U.S., deal with both same-race and transracial adoption. Christina Newhill, adoptive mother of a child from Vietnam and retired professor in Pitt’s School of Social Work, will contribute to the discussion.

The Good Friday Agreement, signed in 1998 in Belfast, Ireland, ended most of the violence in Northern Ireland and led to peace between the British and Irish governments. But where does the country go from there? Adams’ book investigates and analyzes what Northern Ireland’s future may look like. He will read from and discuss his book. The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow. The book-launch celebration is sponsored by Pitt-Greensburg’s Creative and Professional Writing Program.
