“The Pavese Stone” by Judith Vollmer, professor emeritus of English, Pitt–Greensburg (Alice James Books, 2026)
Judith Vollmer’s seventh full-length book of poetry incudes character portraits, elegies, mortality, and her longstanding interest in Italian literature. The book focuses on Vollmer’s nearly five-decades studies of the poems and novels of Cesare Pavese, and includes homages to landscapes northern Italy, southeast Poland, the Adirondack Mountains. and Western Pennsylvania.
“Democracy in Higher Education: Advancing Civic-Minded Student Learning,” edited by Maximilian Schuster, associate chair and associate professor of practice in the Department of Educational Foundations, Organizations and Policy at the School of Education (Routledge, 2026)
This volume explores how colleges and universities can respond to divisive political environments by carefully and intentionally cultivating students’ civic learning and democratic flourishing. Structured in five cohesive sections, each chapter offers adaptable frameworks, promising practices, and tangible strategies for building positive momentum toward civic-minded student learning in higher education.
