CL trees planted to honor Maathai

tree plantingA pair of red maple trees have been planted on the Fifth Avenue side of the Cathedral of Learning in honor of Pitt alumna Wangari Maathai, who was awarded the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her work to form the Green Belt Movement in her native Kenya. The pair symbolize Maathai’s roots in Pittsburgh and in Africa.

Maathai, who died in 2011, established the Green Belt Movement in 1977. The grassroots conservation organization (www.greenbeltmovement.org) has since planted more than 40 million trees.

A dedication is planned but the date has yet to be announced.
