Med school partners with Chinese university

School of Medicine administrators and faculty are traveling to Tsinghua University School of Medicine in Beijing for the inaugural symposium in a collaborative education and research partnership.

The Pittsburgh-Tsinghua Joint Symposium on Medical Sciences 2012, taking place April 21 and 22, will be held in alternating years at each university.

The symposium will focus on drug discovery and development; advances in neurosciences; epigenetics in cancer diagnosis and treatment; immunology; infectious diseases and vaccine development; developmental biology and regenerative medicine, and structural biology and drug development.

Each academic year, beginning this fall, Tsinghua University will send 25-45 Chinese medical and graduate students to Pitt for two years as visiting research scholars. They also will observe health care activities at UPMC. The students already will have completed three-and-one-half years of university education in China.
