Manners Award winner announced

The University Center for Social and Urban Research (UCSUR) has announced the winner of the 12th annual Steven D. Manners Faculty Development Award. The award honors the memory of Manners, the center’s assistant director, who died in 2000.

UCSUR offers awards to promising research and infrastructure development projects on campus.

This year’s winner is Nicholas G. Castle, faculty member in the Department of Health Policy and Management, Graduate School of Public Health, for the project, “Bullying in Nursing Homes.”

Pilot data suggest that the scale and scope of resident abuse is high in the more than 1,700 nursing homes in the United States. Castle’s study will use vignette methodology to assess both the severity and frequency of bullying. Nurse’s aides, who provide 80-90 percent of the direct care to nursing home residents, will be the primary source of data for this study.
