Founders Day symposium today celebrates Pitt's 209th anniversary

"Pittsburgh in a Global Economy" will be the theme of this year's Founders Day celebration set for today, Feb. 29, at 1:30 p.m. in the Ballroom of the William Pitt Union.

Interim Chancellor Mark Nordenberg will give the introductory remarks, followed by Provost James Maher, who will moderate a series of five presentations on Pittsburgh and the global economy.

Speakers, in order of appearance, will be:

* Norman Robertson, former senior vice president and chief economist for Mellon Bank, whose topic will be, "The Struggle for Economic Growth."

* Richard A. Stafford, executive director of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, who will speak on "Responding to the Economic Challenges."

* Frank Giarratani, professor and chair of Pitt's Department of Economics, who will talk about "Restructuring in the Steel Industry and Restructuring Today."

* Alberta Sbragia, professor of political science and director of Pitt's Center for West European Studies. She will discuss the question: "Can Strategic Leaders Make a Difference?"

* Morton Coleman, professor of social work and director of the University's Institute of Politics, who will speak about "People, Places and Economic Transition." This year's Founders Day will commemorate the University's 209th anniversary. The symposium is open to all faculty, staff and students.

A reception will follow the speeches.
