Student fee hikes expected

Two student fees likely are going up.

The trustees student affairs committee recommended last week that full-time undergraduate and graduate students pay $85 per term for the student health fee. That fee has been $65 per term for 12 years, Pitt officials said. (Part-time students are eligible to use the Student Health Service if they pay the full fee.)

According to press materials distributed at the June 5 meeting, the increased fee will offset projected operating losses and “allow for the restoration of services that had been discontinued,” such as dermatology services, as well as extended staff hours.

Pitt officials noted that the current revenue from the fee does not cover operating losses due to increased rent and lab costs at the Student Health Service.

The student affairs committee also recommended raising the Greensburg campus student activities fee, last increased three years ago, from $65 to $85 per term for full-time students and from $18 to $22 per term for part-timers. In April, the increase was approved by the Greensburg Student Government Association, which distributes the revenue among student organizations.

Press materials stated that there is a need “to increase the quality of educational, cultural, social and recreational activities” at UPG. There also has been an increase in the number of students living on campus, and the increase puts UPG’s fee in line with other Pitt campuses, officials noted.

Both fees are expected to be approved at the full board meeting June 27. If approved, the increases would take effect this fall.
