It may be the slow summer season at Pitt, but the Center for Creativity still has plenty going on. And with fewer students on campus, this might be the time for faculty and staff to get involved.
Here’s what’s coming up:
Exposed: Creating Cyanotypes: 4-5 p.m. Aug. 1, Text & conText Lab (310 Hillman Library). Register here
Uncover the world of cyanotype, an alternative photographic print method known for its rich blue tones. See how this camera-less process captures beautiful photograms using just UV light, some simple chemicals, and objects placed on paper. Learn about the science, essential materials, and equipment required for cyanotype printing. Then experiment with botanical elements and photographic negatives to make your own striking prints. No art experience required. All materials provided. Facilitated by William Gillis, Center for Creativity.
Breaking Creative Blocks: 3-4 p.m. July 16 or July 25, C4C: The Workshop (University Store on Fifth). Register for July 16 | Register for July 25
Do you sometimes struggle to find inspiration? Explore exercises and strategies to reignite your creativity in this fun, practical workshop. Discover some of the reasons we get blocked, and try some ways to break through. All materials provided. Facilitated by William Gillis (July 16) or Angela Oddling (July 25), Center for Creativity.
Blackout!: 4-5 p.m. July 30, Text & conText Lab (310 Hillman Library). Register here
Sources for poetry are all around us: newspaper articles, scientific and law journals, junk mail. Explore found poetry through the blackout process in this workshop. The emphasis is on play and discovery in this informal workshop: no previous writing experience is necessary! Facilitated by Ariel Skovera, Center for Creativity.
MyZine: Make Your Own Mini-Memoir: 3-4 p.m. Aug. 6, C4C: The Workshop (University Store on Fifth). Register here
Zines are low-cost, DIY or self-published works created for self-expression or to spread ideas and information, usually through niche or small communities. Dive into their history, explore examples of diary and memoir zines, and discuss how creating and reading these types of zines can be helpful. We'll show you how to fold a mini-zine, and then you'll make your own using whatever supplies inspire you. Facilitated by Angela Oddling, Center for Creativity.
Fiber Hang: Knit: 4-5 p.m. Aug. 8, C4C: The Understory (Cathedral of Learning basement). Register here
At our fiber hang, beginners can learn the basics of knitting (cast-on, knit stitch, and cast-off) in a supportive community environment, and more experienced knitters can share ideas, tips, and tricks with fellow enthusiasts or just work on their own projects. Yarn and needles will be provided, but you can also bring your own if you like. Faculty, staff and students are all welcome! Facilitated by Chloe Baierl, Center for Creativity.
