Humanities @ Work event focuses on compassion and discourse

The seventh cross-disciplinary conference on Humanities @ Work in the Community, Health and Tech Industries will focus on Cultivating Compassion, Civil Discourse, and Embracing the Power of Language — all in line with Pitt’s Year of Discourse and Dialogue,

Registration is open now for the conference, which will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 12 in the University Club, Ballroom A.

The aim of the conference, organized through the Department of Linguistics in the Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences, is to “amplify the practical significance of the humanities, forge robust human connections, encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration, and actively contribute to the ongoing betterment of our society.”

After an introduction by Provost Joe McCarthy, the day kicks off with a keynote address by Anantha Shekhar, Pitt’s senior vice chancellor for health sciences, on "Words Matter: Language, Compassion and Fostering Community."

There will be plenary sessions in the morning and afternoon, as well as a cross-disciplinary panel discussions on “Compassion in Community: Reflecting on Our Framework,” “Exploring The Power of Language & Narrative” and “Engaging Students, Interns, Alumni, and Partners.”
