Homecoming will feature Hillman memories, chancellor Q&A, fireworks

Pitt’s Homecoming 2023, from Oct. 12 to 14, will culminate with the Panthers’ game against Louisville at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at Acrisure Stadium.

Alumni, young and older, can tour the Nationality Rooms, take in other new sights on campus and enjoy a reception and fireworks. There also are several activities planned for specific schools, departments and interest groups. Find the full schedule here.

Most of the events take place on Oct. 13. Here are some of the events on Friday open to the whole community.

Big Idea Center Homecoming Open House, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Drop by the Big Idea Center, 3601 Forbes Ave., for its second annual Homecoming Open House. Tour the building, snack on light refreshments, mingle with Pitt student ventures and alumni companies, and participate in a giveaway.

From the Hill to the Stage: Highlights from the August Wilson Archive, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Archives & Special Collections Instruction Room, 340 Hillman Library. This University Library System exhibit is a tribute to one of the greatest playwrights of the 20th century – Pittsburgh-native August Wilson. This exhibit will feature a range of materials from the recently opened August Wilson Archive, showcasing Wilson's life and work, including scripts, correspondence, handwritten notes, photographs, awards, and more.

My Hillman Memories, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., 1st Floor, Hillman Library. While you’re at the library, learn about the Hillman Reinvention and record your experiences and memories through a living memory capsule that will be preserved for years to come in artwork, design and publications. Can’t make it in-person? Submit your memories online.

The Snake, 2-3:45 p.m., starts in the William Pitt Union and ends at the Cathedral of Learning. The Pitt Band will Snake through campus performing school songs and crowd favorites during the march and the subsequent concert at the Cathedral of Learning.

Meet the Chancellor Q&A and Reception, 3-4 p.m., Alumni Hall, 7th Floor auditorium. Join Chancellor Joan Gabel as she participates in a question-and-answer session with the University community. During this event, Chancellor Gabel will share her vision for Pitt's future in conversation with Kris Davitt, senior vice chancellor for philanthropic and alumni engagement. Alumni are asked to submit questions as part of their registration. A brief reception will be hosted following the session. All members of the University community are invited to attend.

Welcome Back Reception, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Cathedral of Learning Commons Room (1st floor). All Pitt alumni from every year and campus are welcome to come celebrate. Admission includes food, music, a giveaway and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks from the bar. Enjoy memorabilia, yearbooks and other activities.

Homecoming Fireworks and Laser Show, 9-9:30 p.m., Bigelow Boulevard between Forbes and Fifth avenues. The Pitt Program Council presents an amazing display of fireworks and lasers timed to music as Bigelow Boulevard and the Cathedral of Learning are lit up in celebration of Homecoming.

The Pitt Alumni Association Homecoming Tailgate will start at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 14 on the Great Lawn on the North Shore. The tailgate is $40 for those 21 and over, $20 for ages 12 to 20, and $10 for ages 11 and under. 

During the game, the Panthers will recognize Pitt great Darrelle Revis, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame recently.
