Day of Giving raised $2.46 million from 11,473 people

Pitt’s Day of Giving on Feb. 27 raised slightly more than last year, but had just over 2,000 more individual donors, setting a new record of 11,473.

The eighth annual day of challenges and leaderboards raised $2.46 million for schools, programs, clubs and more. Donors were from 50 states, 25 countries and five continents.

The number of Pitt employees — faculty and staff — who donated beat the challenge goal of 2,370, and released an extra $5,000 from the chancellor’s senior staff for the unit that got the most donations — the Pitt Fund.

Other challenge funds — which were provided in part by University trustees, leaders, alumni and friends — allowed the Pitt community to participate in friendly online competitions. The schools, programs and student organizations that landed at the top of the boards received additional funding.

The 2024 challenges and winners included:

Schools and Colleges Raise the Bar Challenge, $100,000: Pitt Nursing took the top spot with a 103 percent increase in donors — 248, compared to 122 in 2023. Winnings will be distributed to the 16 schools, colleges and campuses that exceeded their 2023 donor total.

Schools and Colleges Level Up Challenge, $30,000: Winnings will be distributed evenly across the 14 schools, colleges and campuses that “leveled up” by meeting or exceeding their 2024 donor goal. Pitt Nursing led this list too, with a 176 percent increase from last year.

Places, Experiences and More Participation Challenge for the highest number of donors:  Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, 382 donors, awarded $10,000; Pitt Global, 339 donors, $7,500; Falk Laboratory School, 266 donors, $5,000. These remaining $7,500 in challenge funds were distributed among the other seven donor leaders.

During separate power hours, different units competed for the most donors. The winner in each category received an additional $1,000
